GDF Suez Opens Gas Power Plant in Pakistan

LNG player GDF Suez inaugurated the 375 MW Uch II gas-fired power plant on Friday following successful achievement of commercial operation earlier this month. Located in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, Uch II is an extension to the existing 551 MW Uch plant.

GDF Suez has majority ownership in both Uch and Uch II power plants. The electricity generated from Uch II will be sold through a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with the National Transmission and Despatch Company, a State-owned entity.

Uch and Uch II together generate 926 MW of electricity using indigenous gas, which is economically viable for Pakistan in tackling the country’s power generation shortfall. Pakistan has an installed electricity generation capacity of 23,663 MW with natural gas meeting nearly 47% of total energy requirements in the country.
