Germany - Jungerhans Shipping Takes Delivery of Its New Container Vessels

With the taking over of the recent new building, the traditional shipping company Jüngerhans from Haren (Ems) has terminated for the time being their programme of new buildings.

With this container cargo ship built at the Korean shipyard Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, the new flagship of the fleet has been placed into service. MS “POLARIS J” is the last vessel of a spate of six Panmax container vessels which are completely contracted by the MPC-group and of which four objects have been placed further.

The vessel has a length of 249,10 m and a breadth of 37,40 m with a flotation depth of 13,50 m over a deadweight capacity of 61.660 tonnes (tdw) and possesses storing positions for 4.644 TEU as well as 560 connections for reefer container. The main engine of type Hyundai-B&W 6S80ME-C9 achieves 27.060 kw and allows a speed up to 21,6 knots, whereupon, due to tech-nical conditions, an optimized cruising speed with a corresponding lower efficiency based on schedule and fuel consumption can be triggered. By an optimisation of the design according to the wide-beam concept and by an adjustment to the new Panmax-dimension, a higher dead-weight capacity and therefore an improved economic feasibility could be achieved compared to the first vessels of this series.

At first, MS “POLARIS J” will leave the shipyard for direction Singapore in order to start there the concluded charter engagement with MSC for initially the next six months.

“Without any doubt, a lot of shipping companies worry about the actual existing conditions on the charter markets. Not least because of the high costs for bunker, we are however confident that especially those vessels who achieve a considerable lower fuel consumption due to innova-tive developments will get adequate engagements”, commented Herm Jüngerhans about the employment situation.

The shipping company domiciled in Haren (Ems) is directed in the fourth generation by the brothers Herm and Stefan Jüngerhans. 50 years ago, their grandfather ordered for the first time a new building of a vessel. Since that time, more than 100 vessels have been placed into service whereof around the half has been successfully sold so far. “We are of the opinion that with our young and diversified fleet, we are well positioned in both segments of container and heavy lift navigation in different size and engine-power classes and are well prepared for the future chal-lenges”, explained Stefan Jüngerhans the fleet strategy of the traditional family shipping company.
