Hanjin to Build CMA CGM’s 20,000 TEU Titans

South Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries confirmed on Monday that it will build the three CMA CGM’s 20,600 TEU boxships as the French liner company joins the club of 20,000 TEU owners.

The liner company announced the construction plans at the end of March, without disclosing details on the potential builder of the ships.

The ships will feature 400 m in length, 59 m in width and 33 m in depth and are slated for delivery in 2017.

Hanjin said that the construction work will take place at the yard’s facility in the Philippines, which is believed to be a move aimed at cutting construction costs.

However, the value of the contract has not been revealed. CMA CGM’s counterparts OCCL and MOL paid around USD 155 million for their 20,000 TEU ships.

CMA CGM’s largest container ship is the 17,722 TEU CMA CGM Kerguelen, recently delivered from a yard in South Korea. Nevertheless, the title of the fleet’s biggest ship will soon be taken over by the new sea giants.
