Havyard Wins New Wellboat Contract

Havyard Wins New Wellboat Contract

Havyard has signed a contract with Norsk Fisketransport, a subsidiary of Namsos Trafikkselskap ASA, regarding design and construction of a Havyard 587 wellboat.

The ship will be designed by Havyard Design and Solutions in Fosnavaag and is going to be constructed at Havyard Ship Technology`s shipyard in Leirvik in Sogn, Norway. The shipping company also has an option for construction of one further Havyard 587.

The ship will become newbuild number 124 and is due to be delivered Q3 2015.

Focusing on fish

In addition to this new contract, Havyard has currently a contract for design and construction of a Havyard 535 purse seiner for Smaragd and a Havyard 587 wellboat for Fosnavaag Shipping.

There are plenty of synergies between fish and offshore both in terms of ownership structure and technology development,” says Executive Vice President Sales & International Network in Havyard Group, Tor Leif Mongstad. “That`s why we focus on developing ship design and equipment for fishing and fish farming in addition to the offshore industry. Havyard has developed a number of fishing vessel – and wellboat designs over the last few years and we are optimistic in terms of gaining an even larger share of this market.

Havyard Wins New Wellboat ContractThis is the second vessel that Havyard is going to deliver of the Havyard 587 design, a new generation of wellboats,” Mongstad continues. “We are very pleased that such an important customer chooses Havyard as supplier of both design and construction for their new vessel. Construction of this type of vessel faces tough competition from the shipyard industry worldwide, especially from European and Turkish shipyards. It is therefore very pleasing that we are competitive on price, quality and delivery time.”

Wellboat more attractive

Mongstad says that it has recently become more attractive also for larger shipyards in Norway to construct wellboats. “There have been major changes within the wellboat industry in the last few years, much due to rules and regulations in fish welfare and environment. We believe this will become a new segment for those shipyards that traditionally have constructed offshore vessels.”

Wellboats have become larger and more advanced and are in terms of size and complexity compared to medium-sized OSV vessels. We believe that our competence within offshore, fish- and wellboats make us unique and able to offer the best of what customers need and expect,” concludes Tor Leif Mongstad.

Cooperation on technology development

Havyard Design & Solutions and Senior Designer Kjetil Myren have developed the Havyard 587 design. Myren emphasizes the cooperation in the value chain as the most important success criteria for developing the best within this type of ship design.

In Havyard we are fortunate enough to have design and shipbuilding and also have a supplier of wellboat systems (MMC) within the companies of our group,” says Senior Designer Myren. “We are working very closely in the design phase with the shipowners who have ordered these vessels, and in that way we take care of technology development, user-friendliness and efficiency for the shipowner, as well as construction-friendliness for the shipyard.

Through this cooperation we have developed a very good concept. The best proof of this is in the fact that we have now sold the second Havyard 587 design to a new shipowner before the first one has been delivered. According to demands from the shipowner we have made the necessary alterations in relation to climatic and operational conditions that this wellboat will operate in. New and exciting functions have been fitted in to this vessel,” Myren says.

Efficient and environmentally friendly wellboat

Some of the unique features of the Havyard 587 wellboat design are cylindrical tanks for good flow conditions of water and a steady and even water quality for the fish, efficient filter- and water treatment systems that enable closed transport across long distances, a high lifting height for unloading and advanced systems for delousing of fish.

The combination of an efficient propulsion machinery and optimal hull lines for the relevant operational conditions make Havyard 587 the world`s most efficient and environmentally friendly wellboat design.

Havyard Design & Solutions is more than just design for construction of vessels at Havyard`s own shipyard. HDS also has orders for deliveries of design and equipment packages for the construction of vessels of a Havyard designTM in Spain, Singapore, India and China.
