HR Wallingford: New Guidance on Levee Management (France)

New Guidance on Levee Management

On 3 October 2013, experts from HR Wallingford will join other colleagues in France to present the findings from two international collaborative projects.

The teams of experts working on flood protection of the built environment in the FloodProBE-project and on the International Levee Handbook (ILH) are meeting in Aix en Provence to launch the Handbook and the results of FloodProBE. HR Wallingford has played a pivotal role in both.

Key stakeholders from the USA, UK, France, The Netherlands and several other European countries are attending the event to discuss the outcomes and the potential for further research, development and international collaboration.

Over the last five years, HR Wallingford has been working with partner organisations in the UK and overseas to develop new international guidance on the design, construction and management of levees. The International Levee Handbook (ILH) project, coordinated by CIRIA, has pulled together current knowledge, experience and research into a single, comprehensive handbook.

HR Wallingford played a key part in this process from the beginning. It was one of the driving forces behind the initiation of the project, and has been instrumental in its delivery.

HR Wallingford was also a major partner in another project ‘FloodProBE’, funded under the EC FP7 research program. This project was aimed at providing cost-effective means for flood protection and damage mitigation in urban areas. This 4-year project, coordinated by Deltares, involved 14 partners from around Europe.

The aim was to develop, test and disseminate technologies, methods, concepts and tools focusing on the adaptation of new and existing buildings and on infrastructure networks affected by floods.
