Husky Suspends Operations on Henry Goodrich (Canada)

Canada’s energy company Husky Energy has informed the C-NLOPB that it has suspended operations on the Henry Goodrich following a near miss/dropped object incident that occurred at approximately 3:00 pm on Thursday, August 23.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

According to a press release issued by the C-NLOPB Husky is taking the action as a precautionary measure to ensure there are no future incidents of a similar nature.

The C-NLOPB’s Chief Safety Officer (CSO) met with Husky officials and operations will not resume until the CSO is satisfied that all safety concerns have been addressed.

The Telegram has learned that the “dropped object” was a hydraulic cylinder, part of the equipment that handles the “drill string” on the rig floor.

Henry Goodrich, owned by one of the largest drilling contractors in the world, Transocean, is a Sonat/Mitsui SES 5000 design propulsion assisted semi-submersible drilling unit capable of operating in harsh environments and water depths up to 2,000 ft using 18¾in 15,000 psi BOP and 21in OD marine drilling riser. It was built in 1985.

The rig has been under contract with Husky Energy since 2010. The current contract, at a dayrate of USD 341,000, expires in January 2014.
