Huu-ay-aht First Nations citizens have approved the proposed Sarita Bay LNG project with a 70 percent support in a referendum on Saturday, March 25.

The positive vote means that the Nation will move forward in a co-management relationship with Vancouver-based Steelhead LNG proposed for their traditional territory in Sarita Bay, on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

The natural gas for the proposed project would be sourced from northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta.

Canadian National Energy Board has approved Steelhead LNG’s applications to export up to 24 million tons per annum of LNG for 25 years from the project.
