The second and largest gas storage facility in Iran and the Middle East will come online in the near future, managing director of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Javad Owji announced.

He said that Shorijeh gas storage facility, as the largest gas storage facility in the country, will stock more than 700 million cubic meters of gas for possible withdrawal during the coming winter, Iran’s SHANA news agency reported.

The storage facility could take 10 million cubic meters of gas per day in the first phase while will yield 20 million cubic meters per day when it is needed.

Upon completion of its second phase, the facility will be able to take 20 million cubic meters and deliver 40 million cubic meters of gas per day.

“Gas storage capacity of Shorijeh facility stands at 4.6 billion cubic meters”, he said, adding that upon launching, Iran’s ranking in gas storage will rise from 19 to 5 in the world.

Owji went on to say that, bulk of Shorijeh gas storage facility’s equipment have been made at home so that 82 percent of its equipment in processing sector and more than 40 percent of them in injection are domestically made.

The first Iran’s gas storage facility with 3.3 billion cubic meters capacity was inaugurated last year in Serajeh, near Qom city, in the presence of Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Shorijeh gas storage facility as one of most important and strategic gas storage projects of the country is located east of Iran.
