Japan: Utilities Jan LNG Usage Spikes

The ten regional electric power companies in Japan consumed 5,234,278 mt of LNG in January, a year-on-year rise of 27.1 percent, according to the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPC).

The power companies received 5,189,890 mt of LNG in December, a rise of 39.2 percent on year.

Japan’s monthly LNG imports have been rising steadily year on year, due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

The country’s LNG import prices have been also rising due in part to increased demand for spot LNG but mainly to rising crude oil benchmarks.
