Japan’s June LNG imports drop YoY

Japan’s imports of liquefied natural gas dropped 2.8 percent in June, as compared to the same month a year ago, preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance reveals.

The world’s largest buyer of the chilled gas imported 6.63 million tonnes of LNG in June.

Japan paid 366,500 million yen for LNG imports in June, down 37.3 percent on year, according to the data.

The country’s price of spot liquefied natural gas contracted in June averaged US$7.6 per mmBtu on DES basis, same as in April, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) said earlier this month.

The average price of spot LNG imported into Japan that arrived in June was also at US$7.6 per mmBtu, according to METI.

LNG use by Japan’s ten independent regional electric power companies dropped 8 percent in June to 4.16 million mt of the chilled gas.

The 10 utilities bought 4.50 million mt of LNG in June, down 6.1 percent from the same month last year.

Total electricity generated and purchased across the ten companies declined by 3.7% from a year earlier to 67.22 billion kWh.
