Jumbo Names Its New Heavy Lift Crane Vessel Stella Synergy

Jumbo has announced the name of its new DP2 Heavy Lift Crane Vessel (HLCV) ‘Stella Synergy’, to be delivered in the first quarter of 2020.

The vessel got its name through an internal naming competition where Jumbo employees from around the world were allowed to submit up to three vessel name entries.

Michael Kahn, managing director of Jumbo, with the competition committee chose the winning name, Stella Synergy, submitted by Jiovanni Pardillo who has worked with Jumbo as an AB crew member since 2006.

The winner will receive a cash prize of 2,500 euros, a figure that refers to the 2,500t lifting capacity of the main crane on the new vessel.

Michael Kahn said: “Stella Synergy is a beautiful name that captures the many elements of the Jumbo spirit – it symbolizes Jumbo 50 years ago when we started as pioneers in the heavy lift industry with our first ‘Stella’ vessel. It also symbolizes the complementary relationship between today’s shipping and offshore divisions, as well as the cooperation of the two families, namely Borchard and Kahn. Most of all, Stella Synergy symbolizes what we strive to achieve when we work together with our clients and as a team.”

The Stella Synergy HLCV, with a length of 185 meters and a beam of 36 meters, has been designed together with Ulstein Design and Solutions.

The vessel will be powered by dual fuel engines and has the ability to run on natural gas (LNG).

The main crane of the HLVC will have a 2,500t capacity. Jumbo has opted for a triple hoist to allow for complex upending operations and also chose an Active Heave Compensation (AHC) auxiliary block of 600mt with a depth rating of 3,000 meters.

The second subsea crane will have capacity for 400t with an Active Heave Compensation (AHC) main hoist to control the position of a load relative to the seabed.
