JX Nippon Oil & Energy is to join forces with Japanese utility Hokkaido Gas to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido.

Under the deal, JX Nippon Oil & Energy, a unit of JX Holdings, will allow Hokkaido Gas to use its Kushiro LNG satellite terminal.

“Through this business alliance, we will seek to improve the operational efficiency of the Kushiro LNG terminal and to further strengthen and expand the supply system of natural gas and LNG in Hokkaido,” JX Nippon Oil & Energy said in a statement on Wednesday.

A new company, owned equally by the two companies, will be established to oversee the LNG terminal that started operations back in 2015.
