LNG Canada starts preparation work at Kitimat site

Shell-led LNG Canada said it began preparation work at the project’s site in Kitimat last week.

On December 2, LNG Canada marked the beginning of “specific site preparation activities that will take place in advance of a final investment decision“, the company said in a statement.

This work will put the LNG project in the best position possible for construction, should the project move ahead, according to LNG Canada.

Site preparation activities will include a continuation of LNG Canada’s geotechnical fieldwork to help it better understand the composition of the soil and the land, as well as some seasonally dependent activities.

Work in advance of an FID is not a guarantee that the LNG Canada project will move forward, but is an indication of the commitment our Joint Venture Participants have made to the project, and to ensuring that the local community and Aboriginal Groups benefit from it,” the company added.

LNG Canada is a partnership between Shell, PetroChina, Kogas and Mitsubishi. The project, estimated to cost up to $35 billion, will initially consist of two LNG trains, each with the capacity to produce six million tonnes of LNG annually, with an option to expand the project in the future to four trains.
