LNG use by Japanese utilities drops in May

LNG use by Japan’s ten independent regional electric power companies dropped 7 percent in May, as compared to the same month a year before.

The companies consumed 3.99 million mt of the chilled gas in May, according to data from the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPC).

The 10 utilities bought 3.82 million mt of LNG in May, down 8.6 percent from May last year.

Total electricity generated and purchased across the ten companies in May declined by 3 percent from a year earlier to 64.98 billion kWh.

Nuclear power plants in Japan remained shut down in May resulting in no electricity production at all, FEPC said.
