Miller Backs Up Great Lakes Dredging Plan

U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) issued the following statement after the Michigan State Waterways Commission approved emergency spending for Great Lakes Harbor Dredging in line with a plan put forward by Governor Snyder.

Miller said: “I applaud the quick action taken today by the Michigan State Waterways Commission on the first step in the plan put forward yesterday by Governor Snyder for emergency dredging of Great Lakes harbors in the coming boating season. Access to the Great Lakes through our local harbors, particularly our harbors of refuge, is important to safety on the Great Lakes and to our economy across the state. I understand it is usually the mission of the Waterways Commission to work with local communities to fund improvements to our harbors that don’t include dredging, but the situation we currently face makes the decision they made today to fund emergency dredging and to wave the local match requirement prudent and wise. I am very hopeful that further action by Governor Snyder, his administration, and the state Legislature in the coming weeks and months will help to make certain the people of Michigan will enjoy another great boating season on our Great Lakes.
