Minister Penning tours South Hook LNG terminal

The Minister of State with responsibility for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Mike Penning MP was joined by Preseli Pembrokeshire MP and Under Secretary of State for Wales, Stephen Crabb during a recent visit to the South Hook LNG terminal.

The Minister viewed the terminal, given its status as a Top Tier COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) regulated site and a facility so integral to UK energy security. Also present during the visit were senior representatives of the HSE and Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

During a tour of the terminal, the Minister discussed the regulatory relationship shared between South Hook LNG and HSE Inspectors, as well as the role of the HSE and NRW in their joint regulatory capacity of the Terminal as the Competent Authority.

Of particular interest was South Hook LNG’s approach to safety management and the focus that the company places on the continual improvement of its safety culture.

“We have a significant responsibility to the safety of this operation, and it is one that we take incredibly seriously” said Director & General Manager of South Hook LNG, Yasser S. Al Jaidah.

“We have been delighted to welcome the Minister to South Hook LNG, demonstrating our continued commitment to the safety performance of the Terminal and the robust legal and regulatory framework that governs our operations.”

Speaking of the visit to South Hook LNG, the Minister commented “It’s a pleasure to visit what is one of Europe’s largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminals here in Pembrokeshire. The team at South Hook do excellent work to keep Britain powered in a safe and controlled way. The company’s quality safety culture is underscored by their dedication to continual insight and evaluation of safety standards.”
