Moniz, Masiulis discuss LNG trade in Washington

At a meeting with the US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz held in Washington, Lithuanian Minister of Energy Rokas Masiulis confirmed Lithuania’s readiness to purchase LNG from the USA as soon as US companies start exporting it.

“The more options we have, the better price we will be able to offer to our customers,” said Lithuanian Minister of Energy after the meeting.

Lithuania’s representatives are already negotiating the terms and conditions of LNG export with US energy companies so that LNG could reach Lithuania without delay once the USA launch gas exports. This is expected to happen in one year, stands in the statement by the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy.

Lithuania presents itself to the USA not as a small market of a tiny state but as part of a large regional market.

“Through the Klaipėda LNG terminal gas exporters will be able to supply gas not only to Lithuanian customers but also to the Latvian and Estonian markets and, starting from 2019, to the Polish and Ukrainian markets,” stated Masiulis.

At the meeting in Washington, Moniz expressed interest in the operations of the Klaipėda LNG terminal and discussed energy security issues that are of great importance to the USA. Masiulis presented energy projects under implementation in Lithuania aimed at increasing the energy security of Lithuania and the whole region.
