MPA: Error in Bulker’s Turning Maneuver Caused February Collision

An error in the turning maneuver carried out by Greece-flagged bulker Pireas caused it to collide with Malaysian Government vessel Polaris in Singapore waters in February this year, an investigation has shown.

The collision occurred in Singapore Territorial Waters off Tuas on February 9, 2019. There were no reported injuries or oil leakage.

Following the incident, the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) launched the investigation into the facts surrounding the collision.

The investigation also found that Polaris was anchored at the time in a non-designated anchorage within Singapore Port Limits.

MPA has issued a written warning to the master of the 2006-built Panamax bulker Pireas for the collision.

MPA reminded the shipping community to ensure that vessels operating within Singapore Port Limits comply with the applicable regulations.

The port authority also reiterated its concern that the presence of unauthorized vessels in Singapore’s port waters can cause confusion for the shipping community and threaten navigational safety in the area.
