Norway: Hagland Shipping Expands Fleet

Hagland Shipping based in Haugesund, Norway will during 2nd quarter this year take over 2 new dry cargo ships of 4750 dwt from the Indian yard Chowgule & Co. Private Ltd. in Goa.

The ships are of well-known Dutch design and part of a series of some 20 ships built by the same yard for German and Dutch owners. The vessels are equipped with mainly European equipment and represent a major increase and renewal of Hagland’s fleet of selfdischarging vessels.

The two ships, to be named ‘Hagland Captain’ and ‘Hagland Chief, will be owned in Netherlands and will initially be operated under Dutch flag by the J.R. Shipping group in Harlingen. Hagland will take the ships on 3 years min t/c plus options, but also have option to purchase the ships after 3 years i.e. in 2015. The two ships represent an investment of close to abt NOK 140 mio (abt EUR 18 mio) after modification to selfdischarger.

The two ships which are now under modification and outfitting, will become part of Hagland’s fleet of selfdischargers. Hagland presently operate 9 such ships in the range of 3750 to abt. 5000 dwt, of which 5 are owned by the Hagland group and the balance chartered in. With a total fleet of 11 ships effective spring 2012, Hagland will have a good and flexible fleet for its specialized service to its clients for transport of bulk cargoes such as pulplogs, firewood, woodchips, stone and aggregates, limestone and other bulk materials. The company had a total transported volume of more than 3 mill tons in 2011.

Hagland Shipping is part of the Hagland group, established in 1872, and now include besides shipowning, shipbroking, maritime services and agencies, real estate and financial services.
