Norway: OMV cleared for Barents Sea drilling

The Norwegian authorities have granted OMV, an integrated oil and gas company, their consent for drilling in the Barents Sea, offshore Norway. 

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) granted a drilling permit to OMV for the well 7324/7-3 S located in the Barents Sea.

In addition, OMV received consent for exploration drilling from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to drill well 7324/7-3 S and well 7324/8-3 with the Transocean Spitsbergen semi-submersible drilling rig.

Both wells are located in production license 537. The field is around 166 nautical miles north of Hammerfest and 250 nautical miles north-east of Tromsø.

The production license consists of blocks 7324/7 and 7324/8 and, according to the NPD, the well 7324/7-3 S will be the fifth exploration well in the license.

OMV is the operator with 25% interest and other license-holders are Idemitsu Petroleum with 20%, Petoro with 20 %, Tullow Oil with 20% and Statoil Petroleum with 15%.

OMV has 15 licenses in the North Sea, 10 in the Norwegian Sea and 8 licenses in the Barents Sea and is the operator of nine of these licenses.
