Oil & Gas UK’s seminar to focus on health risks in offshore workplace

Taking care of the health of the offshore workforce is the focus of an Oil & Gas UK seminar taking place in Aberdeen next month, October 7, 2014.

Absence management and the role of occupational health, looking after the health of a travelling workforce and managing concerns such as noise, hand arm vibration, food hygiene and water safety are some of the areas being discussed at the Occupational Health Seminar at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Tom Milne, health and safety manager at Oil & Gas UK, said: “Managing occupational health in the offshore oil and gas industry can be challenging. From speaking to our members we know that health is a key issue and following the launch of a health category in our annual safety awards earlier this year, this is the next step to put health at the forefront of our agenda.

“Next month’s Occupational Health seminar organised by Oil & Gas UK will help explain the bigger picture of occupational health in the oil and gas sector, outlining the hazards, risks and key industry issues at play in today’s workplace.”

Speakers include Professor Diana Kloss, Chair of the Council for Work and Health, and Dr Beau Dees of medical and travel security services company International SOS.

Representatives from organisations and companies including the Health and Safety Executive, Health Protection Scotland, CMC Ltd, Mercer and Total will also give presentations and there will be an update on Robert Gordon University’s size and shape study of the male offshore workforce.

Robert Paterson, health, safety and employment issues director, added: “Focusing on personal health and nutrition as well as the wider issues affecting the sector, this seminar will appeal to those with occupational health as part of their remit or risk profile, including occupational health managers, operations and business managers, risk managers, health and safety inspectors as well as members of the medical community.”
