Oilpro.com shutting down

Oilpro.com, a popular networking website for the oil and gas community, is shutting down.

The website members on Monday, July 31 received a message that Oilpro would be taken down on Wednesday, August 2, after business hours. The same message can be found on the website itself:

“Dear Oilpros,

It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Oilpro.com. Many years ago, we set out to create a vibrant online community of oil and gas professionals. To that end, we were successful – you were successful. We thank you for participating and we hope that Oilpro has made a positive contribution to your career. The bulk of Oilpro’s functionality is still available to allow members to download any of their content they would like to save. We will bring the entire website offline at the end of business, August 2. In the meantime, you may access your contributions on your profile. Thank you again for your support and we wish you the best of luck in the future.

Oilpro, dubbed the Linkedin of the oil and gas industry, found itself in the media spotlight in 2016, after its founder David Kent was arrested, charged, and then pled guilty for stealing data from Rigzone, a website he had founded in 2000 and sold to DHI in 2010 for around $50 million. More on that here: https://bit.ly/1Vf0NtR. 

Following the sale of Rigzone in 2010, David Kent established Oilpro in 2013.

The authorities had charged Kent of stealing information from more than 700.000 Rigzone’s customer accounts. He used this information by inviting Rigzone’s members to join Oilpro. His final goal was to sell Oilpro to the same company he had sold Rigzone to – DHI.

Kent in December pled guilty to one count of intentionally accessing a protected computer without authorization, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
