ONS: UK Offshore Wind Generated GBP 5.7 Billion Turnover in 2014

The offshore wind sector accounted for 6.8% of the total turnover from the low carbon and renewable energy (LCRE) economy in the UK in 2014, equating to GBP 5.7 billion including both direct and indirect activity, according to the latest data from the country’s Office for National Statistics (ONS).

For the UK offshore wind sector, 45.6% of the turnover was generated indirectly.

UK’s LCRE economy generated an estimated GBP 83.4 billion in turnover and 447,500 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs were generated directly and indirectly by businesses active across the LCRE sectors in 2014, including the low carbon electricity group.

The low carbon electricity group generated GBP 24.2 billion in turnover and 86,000 FTE workers across the UK.

The offshore wind sector generated 23.6% of the low carbon electricity group’s turnover in 2014 and 13.4 of FTE jobs, which equates to 11,524 FTE jobs in the sector in the given year.

The low carbon electricity group accounted for 29% of total turnover and 19.2% of total employment generated by the LCRE economy in the UK in 2014.

In Wales, the offshore wind sector generated the largest proportion of turnover in the low carbon electricity group (46.6%, GBP 0.6 billion), followed by 29.5% in England, 3.1% in Scotland and 2% in Northern Ireland, the report shows.
