OTC Brazil: Caterpillar Launches Generator Set for Jack-up Rigs

Caterpillar today announced the Cat® C175-16 generator set is now globally available to customers seeking a high power density and lower emissions offshore drilling module. Rated1830 ekW at 1200 rpm (60 Hz), 4 Cat C175-16 drilling modules provide 7320 ekW of rated power.

This platform was designed to address the increased power demand, emissions requirements and other current needs of the global drilling industry. The Cat C175-16 generator set package is the ideal power supply for jack up drill rigs in the offshore market. The C175-16 also meets U.S. EPA Tier 2 and IMO Tier II requirements.

“This generator set is the new standard for offshore jack-up drilling rigs,” said Bob Gonzalez, Caterpillar Offshore Business Development Manager. “Designed to meet the latest in emissions requirements, the C175-16 provides our customers with the next generation of generator sets while providing competitive owning and operating costs.”

Offering 20 percent more installed power than previous models, the C175-16 allows for deeper drilling and higher mud pump loading. Its compact footprint offers significant weight savings when compared to medium speed engines and allows for retrofit with today’s 3516 module design. In addition, its full featured control system provides for easy interface with the local rig network, and can be controlled and monitored remotely.

The C175-16 is also highly fuel efficient, incorporating a fuel system that uses a high pressure fuel pump and control valve that deliver multiple precise injections within a single combustion event. This results in lower emissions, improved performance and reduced fuel consumption. Driven by the ADEM™ A4 controller, the C175-16 engine management system features full redundancy and provides superior performance, even in the most demanding environments. The fuel system directly impacts customers overall owning and operating costs as the fuel consumption has been optimized for typical drilling load.

The C175 is backed by the worldwide Cat dealer network with trained technicians to ensure service support is never out of reach.
