Statoil of Norway operates Europe’s first export facility for liquefied natural gas located on Melkøya island near Hammerfest.

The Arctic gas from the Snøhvit field in the Barents Sea is sent ashore through a 143-kilometre-long pipeline to the LNG export facilty, and it is processed before being cooled down to liquid form and shipped on tankers to customers around the world.

Foster Wheeler recently won a contract by Statoil to perform a study for the Snøhvit Improvement Project 2 at Melkøya. The company will define long-term solutions to achieve the Snøhvit partnership’s objectives of increasing the operating performance of the LNG facility and increasing the capacity and feed gas flexibility of the plant.
