Police Seize Parts of Fincantieri Shipyard in Waste Management Probe

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri suspended all of the production activities at its Monfalcone shipyard after the local Carabinieri Unit for the Protection of Environment seized some areas of the shipyard yesterday.

The Carabinieri have seized some areas of the Monfalcone shipyard which are strategic for the proper running of the production process, intended for sorting processing residues, Fincantieri said.

The seizure was ordered by the Criminal Court of Gorizia as part of an investigation into alleged illegal waste management at the site initiated in May 2013, which according to Fincantieri was already rejected by the Preliminary Investigating Judge (GIP) at the Court of Gorizia, and by the latter Court on appeal.

Following acceptance of the subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court filed by the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Gorizia, the latter was involved in the matter again and this time ordered the seizure.

Fincantieri said that notwithstanding the intention to urgently take all the appropriate actions in court in order to obtain the revocation of the seizure, the company was forced, in accordance with the aforementioned decision of the Court, to suspend as of June 30 the working activities for all the workers involved in the production cycle of the Monfalcone shipyard.
