Politician calls for WES to be based on Western Isles

A call has been made for Wave Energy Scotland to be located on Lewis, Western Isles, Scotland by Western Isles Labour candidate Alasdair Morrison.

The politician argues that this should be done in order to prevent Lewis from becoming ‘another distant quango living off peripheral resources.’

Morrison notes that the wave and tidal companies that were to operate off Lewis have disappeared, taking with them large amounts of money, and that 12 or 13 new jobs are expected to be created with Wave Energy Scotland located on Lewis.

Alasdair Morrison said: “There is no good reason for an organisation called Wave Energy Scotland to be located anywhere other than on the island which is recognised as offering the best potential for taking this technology forward.

“This would also offer a major economic boost to Lewis and compensate it for the past failure to deliver.”

Morrison added that he has written to Fergus Ewing, Scottish Energy Minister, making the case for WES to be located on Western Isles, and that he has asked MP and MSP for the Western Isles for their support.
