Port Botany Terminal 3 Project Celebrates Major Milestone

The first ship has tied-up at the nation’s newest port facility – Sydney Port Botany Terminal 3 – marking a significant first-year milestone for the Laing O’Rourke delivery team.

The vessel BBC PLATA tied up at what will be the new Sydney International Container Terminal freight hub, after construction crews worked hard to ensure advanced sections of the project could be handed over to allow the docking and the unloading of its cargo of cranes, needed for the next phase of the project.

This puts Laing O’Rourke ahead of schedule on the SPBT3 civil works. Project Leader Mac Harvey said watching that first vessel on approach through Port Botany was immensely satisfying.

“This achievement is the culmination of a huge amount of planning, and to see the first vessel tie up at Terminal 3 is an early glimpse of what this project will become for Sydney.”

Laing O’Rourke is delivering the Sydney Port Botany Terminal 3 project for Sydney International Container Terminal Ltd (SICTL), which is owned by Hutchison Port Holdings, the world’s largest port investor, developer and operator.

The project involves undertaking the major civil works and associated services over 46 hectares of reclaimed area, providing an additional 650 metres of quay line, three new shipping berths, automatic container stacking facilities, dedicated road and rail access, all within a secure estuarine environment.

Region Director Nick Luzar said Port Botany was a landmark project for the Laing O’Rourke Group.

“The fact that this milestone was delivered ahead of schedule and more importantly, with the highest regard for safety, is something we should all be extremely proud of,” Nick said.

“We’ll be registering a series of further milestones over coming months before the terminal is ready to receive its first freighter later in the year – a massive boost for Sydney infrastructure.”
