Qatar: RasGas Partners with International Expert to Improve Safety

As part of the company’s core commitment to the safety of its people, its plant and the environment, RasGas Company Limited (RasGas) held a safety-focused interactive workshop recently. The workshop was attended by RasGas Leadership and Management Team, with the participation of Professor Patrick Hudson, one of the world’s leading authorities on the human factors involved in the management of safety in the oil and gas industry.

The workshop, now in its fifth year, was a part of RasGas’ Elements for Excellence (RGEE); the company’s comprehensive framework of safety policies and procedures implemented throughout RasGas to control the risks inherent in its business with the aim of achieving zero incidents.

Speaking from the event, Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi, RasGas Managing Director, highlighted the objectives of the session. “It is of the upmost importance that our workforce understands not only the personal safety risks associated with our business, but also the process safety risks. Although the potential for process safety risks at major facilities such as RasGas are relatively low, their impact can be far reaching, therefore it is of paramount importance that relevant lessons learned from around our industry are shared and understood by our organisation.” Al Mohannadi said.

Professor Patrick Hudson, a lecturer at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, shared fresh perspectives with RasGas’ Leadership and Management Team on how RasGas can continue to reinforce its commitment to an incident-free workplace and used examples of major process disasters elsewhere in the oil and gas industry to identify the relationship between safety culture, leadership and safe operations.

This annual gathering forms part of RasGas’ continued efforts to sustain and improve RGEE, by collectively thinking about the best approach to achieve an incident-free workplace.

The interactive session drew on the latest research and expertise from the oil and gas industry to help facilitate critical reflection and action by the RasGas Leadership and Management Team, aiming to enhance safety knowledge and achieve the RasGas goal of zero incidents in the workplace.
