Alaska-based Resources Energy, a unit of the Japanese company Energy Resources (ERI), decided to cancel the proposed 1 mtpa LNG project at Port MacKenzie.

“The Matanuska-Susitna Borough was informed by REI Wednesday, March 15 that they were ceasing operations” John Moosey, the Borough manager told LNG World News in an emailed statement.

Moosey noted the project would have helped diversify Alaska’s economy, however, the borough intends to continue its efforts to realize the economic opportunity of Port MacKenzie.

According to the initial proposal, the LNG project would have cost up to US$1 billion and was expected to ship liquefied natural gas to Japan by 2021.
