Report: Cargo Vessel Sinks after Colliding with CMA CGM Norma

Chinese-flagged general cargo vessel YuSheng 366 sank following a collision with Post Panamax containership CMA CGM Norma, Chinese media reported.

As informed, the ship’s crew has been rescued and there are no signs of maritime pollution at the moment.

The incident took place on December 24 in the Pearl River Estuary.

The Chinese Maritime and Safety Administration has confirmed that the general cargo vessel had sunk and has issued navigation warning to the nearby vessels.

“At approximately 0400 local time on December 24, whilst outbound from Nansha (China) to Singapore with a pilot on board, a collision occurred between 9, 415 TEU container vessel CMA CGM Norma and cargo ship Yusheng 366. Crew members from both ships are safe,” CMA CGM told World Maritime News in a statement.

“CMA CGM Norma currently remains at anchor and is in a stable condition. All relevant authorities have been informed, including the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration (MSA).”

Based on the containership’s AIS track from Maritime Traffic, the French-flagged CMA CGM Norma is anchored in the waters South-West of Hong Kong, near the collision site, as investigation into the incident is underway.

CMA CGM added that based on the class inspection performed on December 25, the 2006-built containership had not suffered any apparent damage.

“The vessel is currently waiting for the authorization from local authorities to proceed with her voyage. CMA CGM will continue to work closely with the authorities regarding the investigation,” the company added.
