RGU to hold career event for alumni affected by oil sector downturn

Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University (RGU) will host an alumni careers event later this month for those affected by the downturn in the oil and gas sector.

RGU said  on Thursday that the event will be organized by RGU’s Alumni Council with the aim to help attendees make informed future career decisions – whether it is staying in the oil and gas industry, moving overseas or starting in a completely new branch.

The event is open to all RGU alumni and household family members who have been made redundant or are at risk of becoming such.

According to RGU, the event is scheduled for Thursday, June 16 and will officially start at 4.00pm in the Sir Ian Wood Building at RGU in Aberdeen.

Regardless of the starting time, RGU said that from 2.30pm a number of groups will be on hand to provide information to the attendees, including the Scottish Institute for Enterprise as well as course advisors from RGU and North East Scotland College. The university’s Careers & Employability Centre will also be on hand throughout the event to provide practical help on CV writing, LinkedIn, and Interviewing techniques.

Speakers on the day start at 4 pm and include RGU’s Professor Paul de Leeuw, Stuart Cochrane from FWB Park Brown, Julia Macleod from 2020 Search and Lisa Duthie from Cornerstone.

Alan Dick, RGU Alumni Council chair, and vice president, said:  “We recognize the challenges created by the downturn, and how it’s affecting so many of our former students and their families.

Working with the University we have many resources and contacts which have been pulled together to provide a range of advice and options to meet the wide range needs and circumstances.”

He also added that the RGU Alumni Council’s primary goal will always be to remain supportive of its graduate community.
