ROV Finds R116 Helicopter Wreckage

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) has identified a location of the wreckage of Coast Guard R116 helicopter on the seabed on the Eastern side of Black Rock in Ireland, Marine Institute informed.

The R116 is believed to have crashed into the sea on March 14, after it hit an island.

The Dublin-based search and rescue helicopter R116 had been providing ‘top cover’ during a medical evacuation of a crewman from a UK registered fishing vessel approximately 150 miles west of Eagle Island in County Mayo, which was completed by Sligo based Coast Guard helicopter R118, Marine Institute explained.

According to media reports, three members of the crew are still missing, while one body has been recovered.

The search operations are continuing but are weather dependent, Marine Institute noted.

The search operation is being coordinated by the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Centre in Malin Head.
