Rowan scores Gulf of Mexico jack-up rig contract

Rowan Companies, a Houston-based offshore driller, has won a contract for its Rowan Gorilla IV jack-up rig from Arena Energy.

In its fleet status update on Wednesday, Rowan said the new 300-day contract would start in direct continuation of the prior contract. The rig is currently employed by Energy XII. The new contract is expected to start in January 2016.

The contract is for a drilling campaign in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. When it comes to the dayrate, it will be either $70k or $75k during each well of the contract depending on its location. The Rowan Gorilla IV jack-up rig, built in 1986 is capable of operating in water depths of 450 feet, and it has a maximum drilling depth of 35,000 feet.

Rowan further said its two rigs, Rowan Renaissance and Joe Douglas, in September started their contracts in U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Trinidad, respectively. The Rowan Renaissance drillship is under contract with Spanish oil company Repsol. The Joe Douglas is drilling for Australia’s BHP Billiton.

Furthermore, the company cold stacked two jack-up rigs, Cecil Provine and Rowan Gorilla III.
