Russia: RS Enhances Expertise in Gas Carrier Survey

A training seminar for RS surveyors specialising in gas carrier survey took place at the RS Personnel Training Centre.

Thirty five specialists passed theoretical training and received relevant certificates. Thus, one more step was made towards the enhancement of the RS expertise in the field of marine gas transportation ships survey.

Growing interest to Russian gas export by sea determines the necessity for increasing the number of RS experts trained in marine transportation of gas, construction and operation of gas carriers. Since the opening of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) production factory on Sakhalin in February, 2009, Russia vigorously started to intensify the extent of gas export and, based on the results of the year 2011, took the 8th place in the world in LPG export with the amount of 10,5 mln tons (source: The U.S. Waterborne LNG Reports, US DOE, PFC Energy).

Opening the Seminar, Pavel Shikhov, RS Chief Operating Officer – Head of Classification and Development Directorate, denoted its target as consolidation of RS position in the market of classification services in the segment of high-tech ships for LNG transportation and increasing RS potential for successful participation in prospective projects on gas carrier construction.

“The largest Russian gas carrier charterers, such as Gazprom Global LNG and ОАО Yamal LNG, traditionally engage RS in their projects on marine transportation of gas”, he underlined in his speech.

Hull, machinery and electric machinery surveyors from RS Branches in Russia and abroad participated in the seminar. Up-to-date multimedia, various photo and video materials were used for lecturing. P.M. Grechko, surveyor of RS Representation in South Korea, who is now engaged in the construction survey of LNG gas carriers with membrane tanks at STX Offshore and Shipbuilding yard, informed the audience of practical work experience. Considerable volume and high degree of the submitted information detailing required everyday testing the results of which showed good level of learning – above 80 %.

Upon completion of theoretical training the surveyors will have a probation period for obtaining practical experience of gas carrier survey under construction and in service.
