Scotland’s Newest Dock Launched at Westway

Scottish Government Minister for Transport and Islands, Derek Mackay MSP, announced a launch of a brand new dock facility at Westway in Renfrew.

The new £1.3m development was one of the first locations in the country to receive funding from the Scotland’s National Renewable Infrastructure Fund (N-RIF), managed by Scottish Enterprise.

This investment will ensure that the site is capable of meeting the needs of manufacturing companies operating in the energy and engineering sectors, by providing a much-needed shipping solution for those involved in the transportation of large structures. It is a great boost for Renfrewshire and the West of Scotland in general.

Mr Mackay said: “I have followed the development of Westway Park closely over the years as local MSP and I am delighted to be returning as Minister for Transport and Islands to mark the opening of this impressive and innovative dock facility. It will provide a unique transport solution to support renewable and heavy engineering companies, opening up the riverside for potential use right up the River Clyde and into the River Cart. Westway is already home to a number of significant companies and this dedicated dock facility will make it even more attractive to businesses. I look forward to returning here again in the near future to see the site continue to flourish.”

Westway is rapidly becoming one of the top industrial assets in Scotland – last year more than 350,000 sqft of industrial deals were concluded, with the park welcoming a range of new occupiers including Surface Technology, Renewable Parts and recently Malin Marine.

Companies are also being offered the opportunity to create their own bespoke properties, as part of the pre-let arrangements on a 30-acre site to the south side of the park.

The growth of Westway maximises the opportunity to create a gateway employment site, which meets the needs of existing and new businesses, creates new jobs and reinforces the park’s strategic location, adjacent to Glasgow airport.

The redevelopment contract was managed by GRAHAM Construction and involved dredging of the dock area, along with work to create a navigable channel along the River Cart and the installation of a new quay wall.
