Sea Shepherd’s MV Farley Mowat Sinks

Former flagship of the conservation society Sea Shepherd, MV Farley Mowat, sank on Thursday while moored at Shelburne Harbour, Nova Scotia.

The anti-sealing vessel, which was pending scraping, started taking in water on Wednesday, the Canadian Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard has put 600 feet of containment boom around the vessel because there is a sheen coming from the ship. There were 37 litres of various products aboard the ship when it sank.

The local authorities voiced their concern about the leak fearing for the marine life in the harbor.

“My personal concern is the pollution in the harbour the sea life… We have wonderful marine life there and that’s my first concern, protecting that,”  Shelburne Mayor Karen Mattatall told CBC news.

MV Farley Mowat arrived in the port last September where it was pending dismantling.
