Sierra Club Comments on Cameron LNG Draft Environmental Review

Sierra Club Comments on Draft Environmental Review of Cameron LNG

Sierra Club, along with Gulf Restoration Network and RESTORE, filed comments on Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s draft environmental review for the Cameron liquefied natural gas (LNG) export proposal in Louisiana.

In response Deb Nardone, director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Natural Gas Campaign, released the following statement:

“At a time when the Obama administration is calling for a sharp reduction in carbon pollution this review completely misses the mark. Exporting natural gas puts American families at risk of increased climate disruption, poisoned air and polluted water for no benefit whatsoever.

“FERC’s draft environmental review ignores the fact that the Cameron LNG proposal will increase U.S. gas production, primarily fracked shale gas, and increase gas prices — something that federal agencies predict will lead to increased coal use. So all we get is more carbon pollution, higher prices, and more dangerous fracking.

“This inadequate review fails the administration’s climate goals, and fails the American people. FERC needs to go back to the drawing board and this time address the carbon pollution and safety threat from shale gas production. President Obama must not allow this proposed export facility without a full accounting of the threat to our climate and our health.”
