Singapore Inaugurates First LNG Power Plant

Singapore started its first LNG power plant in an attempt to curb its reliance on piped natural gas.

“Traditionally, we only rely on piped natural gas coming from our neighbors, Malaysia and Indonesia, whereas LNG is international so you can source it from every part of the world,” Reuters reported, citing Yu Tat Ming, CEO of PacificLight Power as saying.

The $955 mln Jurong Island plant is an addition to a variety of projects that are planned as a boost to Singapore’s profile as an LNG trading hub. The 800 MW facility will be the largest consumer of LNG in the state but it will help with the energy supply in a country that expects an electricity demand growth by 2-4 percent annually over the next few years.

Singapore announced plans to build a second LNG receiving terminal earlier this year, adding to the first terminal with a capacity of 9 mln tonnes per year.
