Ministry of Labor Honors Three Members of SHI

Senior Manager Wang-Geun Lee of the Institute of Industrial Tech, Senior Manager Chang-Su Son of the Production Engineering Team and Senior Manager Sun-Ki Hong of the Quality Management Team of Samsung Heavy Industries were honored as 2012 Korean Meisters by the Ministry of Labor and Human Resources Development Service of Korea.

Since 1986, the Ministry of Labor and Human Resources Development Service of Korea has regularly honored Korean Meisters, a title awarded to engineers who have served in a specific sector for more than 15 years, contributed to technological development and developed the best skills.

Since he joined Samsung Heavy Industries in 1982, Senior Manager Wang-Geun Lee, who was honored as a Production Automation Meister, has dedicated himself to the development of production automation equipment, including precision processing technology for large bearings that is used in the assembly of ship propellers and rudders and light steel scaffold, which may eventually replace wooden scaffold. In addition, he has contributed to productivity improvements and cost savings for the shipyard by improving processes and applying various technologies necessary for automation.

Senior Manager Chang-Su Son of steel pipe making has been highly recognized as an excellent engineer by winning the Gold Prize and the Copper Prize at the Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Vocational Training Competition and the National Vocational Training Competition in 1988 in the category of iron structures. For 30 years, he has significantly contributed to the successful completion of more than 50 types of offshore structures and drill ships, including the world’s largest offshore platform, through his rich expertise related to the manufacturing and installation of ships and offshore structures.

Senior Manager Sun-Ki Hong of quality management, the youngest meister to be honored this year, has developed a differentiated quality management system by dedicating himself to quality management for 18 years since joining Samsung Heavy Industries in 1994. He has contributed to improving the quality competitiveness of the domestic shipbuilding sector and the adoption of the quality management system in Korea by conducting tech training for partners, quality training for domestic and foreign material and equipment suppliers and quality reviews on domestic and foreign material and equipment suppliers as an ISO quality management inspector.

In a joint statement, the three meisters said, “We have developed our skills in our domain since we were new employees, and now we are skilled engineers. We hope that young engineers will be motivated by us. We would like to contribute to the development of Korea’s shipbuilding industry by transferring our skills and expertise to the next generation of meisters.
