Sudan looking for foreign investment in gas sector

Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir said the country plans to create foreign investment opportunities in natural gas extraction sector.

The country is also looking into gas import possibilities in order to fuel power generation, reports Reuters.

Bashir also said the government had established a gas company to facilitate gas imports and the construction of a gas pipeline from Port Sudan to the capital. He also noted that domestic gas production will increase, providing opportunity for investment.

The country does not have the pipelines or the port terminals to bring in liquefied natural gas but according to Sudan’s minister of defence the country entered talks with Qatar to try and agree imports for as early as next year.

The majority of Sudan’s electricity is generated by hydropower facilities but turning to gas would reduce energy costs.
