Taiwan increased its imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 20.6 percent in April on a yearly basis, according to the data released by the Directorate General of Customs.

The world’s fifth largest LNG buyer imported 1.29 million mt of LNG in April, as compared to 1.07 million mt in the same month last year.

Qatar, the world’s largest LNG exporter, remained the dominant supplier of the fuel to Taiwan in the month under review.

LNG imports from Qatar reached 866,759 mt, followed by Indonesia that supplied 552,850 mt of the chilled fuel to Taiwan in April.

The rest of the LNG imports came from Papua New Guinea, Russia, Malaysia, Australia and UAE, according to the customs data.

Taiwan currently imports the chilled fuel via two regasification terminals, located in the central and southern parts of the island.

Worth mentioning, the country has recently received a cargo from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG export terminal in Louisiana, the first ever US LNG cargo produced from shale gas to reach Taiwan.

With less reliance on nuclear power and dwindling domestic natural gas resources, Taiwan is expected to continue boosting its LNG imports in the future to drive power sector growth.
