Gallery: Turkish-Flagged Ship Sinks, One Dead

One crew member of a Turkish-flagged cargo ship died when the ship sank having collided with a freighter near the Bosphorous Strait.

The 1,105-ton ship identified as Akel collided with the bulk carrier Sengul K, also registered in Turkey, near the town of Riva. The collision inflicted severe damage to the 1968-built Akel, which started taking on water and subsequently sank.

The bulk carrier sustained minor damages to the bow and was anchored close nearby.

Turkish General Directorate of Coast Safety dispatched tugboats to the scene, where it rescued eight crew members of the ill-fated ship.

The body of the deceased ninth crew member was found a couple of hours later in the day, the Coast Guard said.

The rescued crew was taken by the Coast Guard to the local hospital for medical examination.

Later in the day the Coast Guard reported of another incident that left the 2014-built Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier KSL Sydney adrift in the Dardanelles Strait following an engine failure. The ship was towed to Karanlık Liman,  Çanakkale, where it was anchored.

There were no injuries reported.
