ABPmer Specialist Contributes to Special Issue of Coastal Engineering Journal

ABPmer, a leading UK marine environmental consultancy, has recently published four articles in a special issue of the international journal, Coastal Engineering. Edited by ABPmer’s Jon Williams, a specialist in sediment processes, the issue focuses on the results from a large-scale laboratory study of gravel barrier dynamics.

The journal articles centre on the results from the Barrier Dynamics Experiments (BARDEX) in which a large scale wave facility was used to simulate cross shore processes interacting with a gravel beach. The prototype gravel barrier, located at the Delta Flume in the Netherlands, features both seaward and lagoon facing slopes. With interaction of the sea and lagoon dynamics being a key coastal management question on many coastlines, the data from the experiments is useful for understanding the management aspects of beaches.

The near full scale simulations of the BARDEX experiments have helped to contribute to a new level of understanding for beach behaviour.

Bill Cooper, ABPmer Managing Director said: “We are pleased to contribute to the studies featuring in this special issue. I expect this to be of great value to coastal scientists and engineers wishing to enhance their understanding of key beach processes as well as enable them to explore controlled laboratory data in their own investigations of barrier dynamics”.

ABPmer is a recognised specialist in physical process understanding and assessment. It providesscientific advice and environmental services to the marine sector, offering bespoke sustainable solutions to all of its clients.
