UK Detains Five Foreign Flagged Vessels in October 2016

UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has revealed that five new vessels were detained in the country’s ports during October 2016 after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection.

Four vessels remained detained from previous months, making a total of nine foreign flagged ships which were under detention in October.

Detentions carried over from previous months included the following vessels: Partagas, Sea Trident, Southern Star and Cien Porciento.

The Malta-flagged bulk carrier Partagas was released on October 4, 2016, while the remaining three vessels are still under detention.

Ships detained in October 2016 include Christopher, Sam Falcon, Svetlana, Diamonde and Malaviya Seven.

The Antigua & Barbuda-flagged containership Christopher was put under detention on October 26 at Southampton and released three days later.

In addition, the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Sam Falcon was detained on October 19 at Liverpool and released from detention on October 26.

Another Malta-flagged vessel, the Svetlana, was detained on October 12 at Cardiff and subsequently released on October 31.

The fourth vessel, the St Vincent & Grenadines-flagged general cargo ship Diamonde, was put under detention on October 5 at Wisbech and released eight days later.

The only ship detained in October that was not released by the end of the month was the India-flagged Malaviya Seven.

The Malaviya Seven is one of the two ships whose crews were left abandoned in the UK. The detention was over wages owed to the replacement crew of the vessel.

The crews of the two offshore supply ships, Malaviya Twenty and Malaviya Seven, have been abandoned by their owners after they were held in Aberdeen, Scotland, and Great Yarmouth, England.
