Ukraine Gas Deal Can Be Changed Only through Talks with Russia, PM Says
The gas contract between Ukraine and Russia can be altered only by means of negotiations in which the current authorities have been up to for the three years. Prime Minister Mykola Azarov stressed during a session of the Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday.
“I want with all responsibility to declare: all the three years every top level meeting – between Presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Prime Ministers, profile ministers have started and ended in nothing but a demand of the Ukrainian party to reconsider the concluded by Tymoshenko bonded gas contract,” Mykola Azarov has said and noted that this problem appeared the main irritant in relations between Ukraine and Russia which was repeatedly underlined by both the President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister.
The head of Government added “according to the legal experts, resulted from betrayal by previous state leaders of national interests the contract was concluded so advantageously for Russia and so disadvantageously for Ukraine that to terminate the contract in another than negotiation way does not prove possible”.
“And to pay legal costs for an attempt to abrogate the deal would mean to inflict another blow to Ukrainian citizens,” Mykola Azarov stated.
