GDF Suez Confirms Death of Two Offshore Workers (The Netherlands)

GDF Suez has confirmed that an accident has occurred earlier today on board of its gas platform in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. Two workers died and one was injured.

In a release sent to Offshore Energy Today via e-mail, the company’s Dutch subsidiary said that the accident occurred on 14th June 2013 at
approximately 09.45 hrs on board of the L5A platform, approximately 103 km North of Den Helder.

GDF SUEZ E&P Nederland B.V. explained that the accident happened during pressure tests on the equipment. The injured person has been evacuated from the platform to a hospital at 11.40 hrs. According to the Dutch Coast Guard, the injured worker is currently in a stable condition.

GDF Suez said it has activated emergency response plan and the company concluded the statement by expressing its “sympathy with the families and loved ones at this difficult time.”

Dutch Coast Guard spokesman Peter Westenberg told Reuters that a high-pressure hose shot loose during maintenance work, killing two workers and injuring a third. He added that there was no fire or explosion.
