US oil sanctions waiver seen as ‘financial lifeline’ for Russia

Germany’s non-profit environmental research organization, Urgewald, has offered its take on Washington’s decision to present Russia with a month-long sanctions waiver amid the Middle East conflict between Iran and the United States (U.S.)-Israel alliance.

The United States issued a 30-day sanctions waiver on March 12, 2026, allowing the sale of Russian oil already loaded on tankers, which is a measure Washington portrays as being intended to ease market disruption linked to the Middle East conflict. The authorization is valid until April 11, 2026.

Urgewald’s explains that the development comes after a new analysis from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, published by the German NGO, showed Russia earned an estimated €6 billion from fossil fuel exports since Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran began on February 28, 2026.

At current revenue levels of around €510 million per day, Russia’s fossil fuel earnings are estimated to be able to buy roughly 17,000 Shahed 136 attack drones every 24 hours. As a result, campaigners warn that waivers allowing additional Russian oil sales risk pushing that number even higher.

Alexander Kirk, Sanctions Campaigner at Urgewald, commented: “The U.S. sanctions waiver risks throwing Russia a financial lifeline just as Moscow is profiting from the geopolitical shock created by the Iran conflict. Every time sanctions are weakened when energy prices rise, the message to the Kremlin is clear: wait long enough and the West will blink.

“Russia has already made billions from fossil fuel exports since the strikes on Iran began. Allowing more Russian oil onto the market now only helps refill the Kremlin’s war chest, undermining US foreign policy and weakening European security. Ukrainians will pay in blood for that choice.”
