Chart Energy and Chemicals, a unit of Chart Industries, has been awarded a patent for its cryogenic liquefaction process technology by the US Patent and Trademark office.

As Chart said in its statement on Tuesday, the technology, named IPSMR, is initially intended for use in the production of liquefied natural gas.

Speaking of the patent award, Andrew Moriarty, president of Chart Energy and Chemicals, noted that with the increase in global demand for natural gas, research and development is of great importance for the industry.

He added that the IPSMR process technology and the company’s modular plant solutions are at the center of many of the proposed investments, at various stages of regulatory approval, that will enable the export of North American LNG.

Chart Industries is also working on developing the IPSMR technology for liquefaction processes of ethane, ethylene as well as energy storage projects.
