Army Corps of Engineers Takes Delivery of Towboat General Irwin

Horizon Shipbuilding Inc. announced on Wednesday that it has delivered an inland river towboat, the M/V General Irwin, to the Army Corps of Engineers in Eufala, Alabama.

The towboat was christened „The General Irwin“, on March 30th, in Eufala. According to MarineLink.com, among the attendants to the ceremony were the Army Corps of Engineers leadership, members of the greater Eufala civilian community, two descendants of General Irwin, and on behalf of the Horizon Shipbuilding Inc., the President Travis Short and John Carnley, who served as project manager on the construction.

About 240 employees worked on the vessel for 13 months. The total value of the project was $3.8 million.

Characteristics of the towboat:

  • a total of six rudders; two steering and four flanking rudders
  • two Caterpillar diesel engines generating 770 horsepower to its 48-inch propellers
  • hull speed when towing is four knots; full speed is eight knots
